  • To gain the necessary experience which will be of vital importance to any career path I may pursue once I graduate.

  • Studying history has helped me to develop the following skills:
  • critical reasoning and analytical skills, including the capacity for solving problems and thinking creatively, often through extensive reading;
  • intellectual rigour and independence, including the ability to conduct research using different types of tools, such as information and communications technology, and sources;
  • the ability to construct an argument by selecting and ordering relevant evidence and then to communicate findings in a structured, clear and persuasive manner, both orally and in writing;
  • additional communication skills, such as negotiating, questioning and summarising;
  • self-motivation and self-reliance with the ability to work without direct supervision and manage time and priorities effectively;
  • the capacity to think objectively and approach problems and new situations with an open mind
  • Having a degree in Human Resources Management has helped me to develop a completely separate skill set to those of the history degree: It has -

Cineworld Cinemas145-159 West Nile Street, Glasgow, G1 2RL
Multifunctional04/09
  • Working on several different departments within the cinema, serving snacks, cleaning screens and working on the box office.The job involves constant interaction with customers. Although I have alternated between part-time and full-time in this job (due to study commitments), it has improved my self-confidence, taught me how to work as a team effectively and to respect the roles of your fellow colleagues. Due to the fact that it is the busiest cinema in the UK, it shows the extent to which teamwork is of vital importance to achieving the company's goals and also meeting and perhaps exceeding the customers' expectations/cinema experience.

Lauchlan Cleaning CompanyBeith, North Ayrshire
Caretaker/JanitorNovember, 2009
  • Worked for an independent cleaning company for around 6 months, working at several of their contracts around Scotland. Of most value, was my experience of acting as a caretaker/janitor for a tenement of valuable flats, with wealthy occupants for a couple of months. I had to ensure everything to do with the surrounding area and each of the flats themselves were in excellent order. Had to tend to different individuals' needs when problems arised, and had to adapt my time-management skills to carry out all the daily tasks which needed done. Due to the status of the occupants, there was no room for error, and the pressure of the job was very high.
